AT ON TRACK PERSONAL TRAINING

Build Muscle the Right Way

Building muscle sounds simple on paper: train hard, eat well, and your muscles grow. In reality, many people discover it’s not quite that straightforward. The fitness industry is full of conflicting advice about muscle building. One source tells you to lift heavy, another says lift light. Some recommend training a muscle once a week, others several times. Social media is full of influencers promoting shortcuts, miracle programmes, and unrealistic expectations. It’s no wonder so many people become frustrated when they don’t see the progress they’re hoping for. At On Track Personal Training, Tommy helps clients cut through the confusion and focus on proven principles that deliver sustainable results. Whether your goal is to become stronger, add lean muscle, improve athletic performance, or increase overall confidence, a personalised training plan can help you get there more efficiently.

Why Building Muscle Can Be Difficult

Many people work incredibly hard in the gym but struggle to see measurable progress.

This is rarely because they are lazy or lacking commitment.

Common reasons for slow or stalled progress include:
  • Following poor advice
  • Inconsistent training
  • Ineffective exercise selection
  • Lack of progression
  • Insufficient recovery
  • Poor nutrition
  • Overtraining
  • Undertraining
  • Unrealistic expectations
The good news is that these challenges can usually be addressed with the right guidance and structure.

If you’ve trained before and failed to see lasting results, that doesn’t mean muscle building isn’t for you. More often than not, it means your approach needs refining.

Different Goals Require Different Training

Muscle building is not a one-size-fits-all process.

Different goals often require different training methods, exercise selection, and progression strategies.

At On Track Personal Training, Tommy works with each client to understand exactly what they are trying to achieve before designing a programme around those objectives.

Strength Development

Some clients are primarily interested in becoming stronger.

Strength-focused training typically places greater emphasis on:
  • Progressive overload
  • Compound exercises
  • Lower repetition ranges
  • Technical proficiency
  • Nervous system adaptation
The goal is to improve your ability to generate force and become physically stronger over time.

This type of training can benefit everyone from beginners looking to improve everyday function to individuals wanting to improve sporting performance.

Lean Muscle Development

Many clients want to build lean muscle while improving overall body composition.

This approach focuses on gradually increasing muscle mass while maintaining a balanced, healthy physique.

Benefits may include:
  • Improved muscle definition
  • Better physical performance
  • Increased confidence
  • Enhanced metabolism
  • Improved strength
Programmes are carefully balanced to support development without unnecessary weight gain.

Hypertrophy Training (Bulking)

For clients specifically focused on maximising muscle size, hypertrophy training can be used.

Hypertrophy refers to the increase in muscle size achieved through targeted resistance training and appropriate nutrition.

This style of training often requires:
  • Higher training volumes
  • Structured progression
  • Appropriate recovery
  • Consistent nutrition
  • Long-term commitment
Tommy can guide clients through a structured approach designed to support muscle growth while helping them avoid common mistakes that can limit progress.

The Importance of Good Technique

Many people focus entirely on how much weight they are lifting while paying little attention to how they are lifting it.

Good technique is essential for:
  • Maximising muscle engagement
  • Improving results
  • Reducing injury risk
  • Building confidence
  • Supporting long-term progression
Learning correct form from the beginning helps establish strong foundations that continue to benefit your training for years.

Recovery Is Part of the Process

One of the most common misconceptions about muscle building is that growth occurs during training.

In reality, training provides the stimulus, but adaptation happens during recovery.

This means factors such as:
  • Sleep
  • Nutrition
  • Stress management
  • Recovery time
all play important roles in supporting progress.

Tommy helps clients understand how these factors work together so they can get the most from their efforts.

Nutrition Matters

Exercise alone is rarely enough to maximise muscle development.

To support muscle growth effectively, your body needs adequate nutrition.

Depending on your goals, Tommy can provide guidance that helps you understand:
  • Protein intake
  • Energy requirements
  • Healthy eating habits
  • Nutritional consistency
  • Sustainable dietary choices
The focus is always on creating realistic habits that support your training rather than following restrictive or unsustainable approaches.

Suitable for Beginners and Experienced Lifters

Many people assume muscle-building programmes are only for experienced gym users. In reality, beginners often make excellent progress because their bodies respond quickly when following a structured training programme. Whether you’re completely new to resistance training or have been exercising for years, Tommy can create a programme appropriate to your experience level.

Avoiding Gym Intimidation

Starting a muscle-building programme can feel intimidating.

Many people are concerned about:
  • Looking inexperienced
  • Using equipment incorrectly
  • Being judged by others
  • Receiving conflicting advice
  • Not knowing where to start
At On Track Personal Training, you’ll receive personalised guidance in a supportive environment where questions are encouraged and progress happens at your pace.

Building More Than Muscle

While bigger muscles may be the goal for some clients, resistance training provides many additional benefits. Muscle-building programmes can also help improve: ● Strength ● Confidence ● Posture ● Bone health ● Mobility ● Functional fitness ● Sporting performance ● Overall wellbeing The result is often a stronger, more capable body that performs better both in and out of the gym.

Why Choose On Track Personal Training for Muscle Building?

Tommy understands that successful muscle development is about more than simply lifting weights.

It requires the right combination of:
  • Effective training
  • Appropriate progression
  • Sound technique
  • Recovery
  • Nutrition
  • Accountability
  • Consistency
By creating a plan tailored specifically to your goals and experience level, Tommy helps remove the guesswork and gives you a clear path forward.

Whether you want to build strength, add lean muscle, increase size through hypertrophy training, or finally break through a plateau, On Track Personal Training can help you get your progress back on track.
